・Blood stasis treatment (cupping treatment) is effective in improving the stagnation and quality of blood and lymphatic fluid.
According to Dr. Seino,
Blood Stasis Treatment (cupping) does not release blood from the body; it is a treatment that efficiently removes only the blood that has lost its activity or has completed its role. One of its advantages is that it does not cause the loss of necessary blood. Additionally, it has the effect of warming the entire body. Blood Stasis Treatment is an excellent therapy in terms of heat treatment as well.
When performing Blood Stasis Treatment (cupping), the entire body warms up. In individuals with low body temperature, their body temperature increases by more than one degree. It is effective for people with so-called cold sensitivity, those whose extremities are cold, those who always feel cold, those who do not sweat, those with low activity levels, and those with decreased internal organ function.
What is Blood Stasis?
First, the term “瘀” (in “瘀血” or “oketsu”) means “old” in this context. “瘀血” can be read as ふるぢ “furudji” in Japanese. Blood Stasis (瘀血) refers to old blood, meaning blood that has lost its activity.
Since the Edo period in Japan, illnesses have been categorized into three categories: “Ki-Ketsu-Sui” (気血水). 気 “Ki” refers to mental illnesses, 血 “Ketsu” to physical illnesses, and 水 “Sui” to illnesses related to the blood. Although it is sometimes called “water toxicity”, in a broader sense, it refers to all bodily fluids.
Blood Stasis treatment is effective for diseases related to the blood. While there are various conditions and diseases associated with blood, the treatment of Blood Stasis addresses many of them. Among the various treatments for Blood Stasis, “Blood Stasis Suction (Cupping) Therapy” is one of the most representative methods. The treatment for “Blood Stasis” has been practiced in China since ancient times. The treatment method using bamboo tubes or porcelain is referred to in China as 抜缶療法 “Bakkan Therapy” or 抜火缶療法 “Fire Cupping Therapy” in recent years. In Japan, in 1985, the translator of the book **中医臨床 Chinese Clinical Medicine** used the term “吸玉療法 Suidama Therapy” (Suction Cup Therapy) as a translation. Since then, “Bakkan Therapy” has been equated with “Suidama Therapy” in Japan, and later, the term “Suidama Therapy” became more specifically associated with the method using glass cups. Since the term “cupping” became commonly used in English, the name “cupping = Suidama Therapy” has become more established. In recent years, there has been a tendency to distinguish the treatment using bamboo tubes or porcelain as “Bakkan Therapy”, but many people are unaware that originally all of these methods fall under “Bakkan Therapy”.
