Can Overuse of the Eyes or Ears Trigger Dizziness?

These days, many people spend most of their waking hours looking at their smartphones or constantly listening to music through earphones. The eyes and ears are responsible for taking in external information. Inside the brain, blood pressure is high and a large volume of blood flows in to process this information. However, when an excessive amount of information is taken in for long periods of time, the brain cannot keep up with processing, and certain areas experience temporary poor circulation. At such times, it becomes difficult to maintain posture while standing or sitting, leading to lightheadedness or dizziness.

When dizziness occurs and you feel eye fatigue, first close your eyes. Lightly press your closed eyes with three fingers of each hand and slowly take deep breaths. Gradually, the dizziness will subside. If possible, lie down. If there is pain in the eyes, cooling a towel with water to around 4°C and placing it over the eyes for a few minutes is also effective.

When dizziness occurs and you feel ear fatigue, first cover your ears with your palms and slowly repeat deep breathing. As the dizziness eases, lightly rub the ears by placing your index and middle fingers around them and gently stroking upward from bottom to top several times. This helps improve circulation around the ears.

Overuse of the eyes and ears also tends to interfere with mental activity, so it is important to rest them regularly. It is recommended to take a 5–10 minute break after every hour of activity.

Acupuncture and Moxibustion Are Highly Effective for Dizziness

The causes of dizziness are wide-ranging, and it can be triggered by many different conditions. At acupuncture clinics, many patients come with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) or Meniere’s disease. Although the exact mechanism of how acupuncture works in these cases has not yet been clarified, its effectiveness is high, and the probability of symptom resolution is significant.

For those suffering from dizziness, it is recommended to consult an acupuncture clinic or a healthcare facility where licensed acupuncturists practice, to address not only symptom relief but also the improvement of underlying conditions. Acupuncture and Oketsu (blood stasis) therapy are considered “integrative internal–external treatments,” capable of influencing internal organ function from outside the body.

For people who have not achieved results with medication (internal medicine) or whose symptoms have not disappeared even after surgery (surgical treatment), acupuncture (internal–external treatment) is highly recommended.

For individuals with decreased physical strength, yoga is also advisable. By practicing yoga exercises and breathing techniques, dizziness can be alleviated and even prevented.
