What Is Low Blood Pressure?

Low blood pressure, or hypotension, is generally defined as a systolic blood pressure (the upper number) of 100 mmHg or lower and a diastolic blood pressure (the lower number) of 60 mmHg or lower, according to criteria commonly attributed to the World Health Organization (WHO). ❶

There are two main types of low blood pressure.

Secondary (symptomatic) hypotension, which accounts for approximately 10% of cases according to some estimates, occurs as a result of identifiable underlying conditions. These may include severe blood loss due to injury, heart disease, malnutrition caused by gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine abnormalities, or advanced stages of cancer.

Primary (essential) hypotension, which is estimated to account for approximately 90% of cases, occurs without any identifiable underlying disease or specific medical cause.

People with low blood pressure may experience symptoms such as:

  1. Lightheadedness when standing up
  2. Dizziness
  3. Fatigue or general weakness
  4. Headaches
  5. Shoulder stiffness
  6. Cold hands and feet
  7. Difficulty concentrating

Because these symptoms are relatively common and can occur in anyone who is feeling unwell, low blood pressure tends to receive less attention than high blood pressure.

Many people who experience these symptoms daily, despite having no diagnosed medical condition, may simply assume that they are naturally prone to such discomfort. As a result, they may continue their daily routines without seeking treatment or reconsidering their lifestyle habits.

Based on my clinical experience, I believe that low blood pressure and its associated symptoms may improve significantly through appropriate changes in daily lifestyle habits.

Medical accuracy note: Definitions of hypotension vary, and a blood pressure below 90/60 mmHg is commonly used as a clinical reference. The 100/60 mmHg threshold and the estimated 90%/10% distribution should be verified against the cited source before publication. Not everyone with naturally low blood pressure requires treatment, particularly if they have no symptoms.

Is It Dangerous to Leave Low Blood Pressure Untreated?

Low blood pressure should not be taken lightly when it persists over a long period and begins to cause symptoms that interfere with daily life. Common symptoms include dizziness and lightheadedness. In more severe cases, fainting or loss of consciousness may occur. Particular attention should be paid if symptoms such as loss of appetite or weight loss develop. People who have underlying medical conditions and are taking medication should consult their healthcare provider.

In any case, leaving low blood pressure untreated may pose serious health risks, particularly when it is associated with an underlying medical condition. Special attention should be given to symptoms related to the heart, thyroid gland, or pancreas, as these may indicate conditions requiring medical evaluation.
